PEDDER PASSER RATING (P.P.R.)

Other Applications

The Pedder Passer Rating can also be used to rate pass DEFENCES. It is important to make sure though, that your team-totals and league-totals both include/don't include sacks. i.e. both are for gross yards,or both are for net yards (gross yards minus sack-yardage). The figures used for Passers are GROSS yards (i.e. sacks are not included).

"And what about a Pedder Rusher Rating?" I hear you say. :-) At this stage, this is not possible, unfortunately. A LOT of research would be needed to do this. The reason? Currently data isn't calculated for a Rusher's CONSISTENCY. i.e. a rushing equivalent to a Passer's completion percentage.

You COULD try using yards per carry times touchdowns divided by fumbles, but it's somewhat unsatisfactory without some kind of measure of CONSISTENCY in there. In both the P.P.R. and N.F.L. systems, consistency (completion percentage) is THE most important thing, and it should be for Rushers too.

The way to do it,would be to equate a rush of say 4 yards or more as being "good" (equivalent to a completion),and a rush of LESS than 4 yards as "bad" (equivalent to an INcompletion). In recent times,at least, the raw data is available to DO this, but someone would have to go THROUGH all that data to work that stuff out. Perhaps ONE day someone might. :-)

And,of course, once you DID have those consistency measures for rushing, and rush defence, being published, you could also work out a Pedder Rush Defence Rating, giving you the full set - Pedder Passer Rating,Pedder Pass Defence Rating,Pedder Rusher Rating, and Pedder Rush Defence Rating. :-)
